Quarter 3 News (January 9th - March 16th)

Half the year is gone! This year seems to be flying by. Each student has been working hard to develop themselves physically, intellectually, and spiritually. Christmas time was a much deserved and much needed break. Now, it's back to work!

This quarter we're going to be confusing the muscles for a greater level of development and endurance. We'll have our “normal” p.e. exercises and games. We'll be working on learning additional sports and improving on sports that we have enjoyed during the school year up to this point. Now, here is the shock challenge: at irregular intervals, we'll be doing a monstrous amount of exercise in one class period. For example, instead of completing 10-15 push-ups, we'll complete 50. Don't be surprised that your student is tired and sore after these days. They've learned a new science term, “lactic acid”. I will also specifically teach them what they need to do to minimize and overcome the soreness. Question them about the challenge and let them teach the benefits to you. A lesson taught is a lesson more completely learned.

Students recognize that p.e. class is difficult, but not impossible. Those that are participating in other sports have acknowledged that the class has prepared them to perform at a higher, more successful level on their team. They get to play harder and longer than others on the team. One student let me know that she does in p.e. class is harder than what her team coach asks her to do. To quote her, “P.E. class makes it easy.”

It won't be long until we're winding down the school year. P.E. class will still continue full-tilt. We have the President's Physical Fitness Test coming up and the awards that go with it. Keep practicing. If you're curious as to the requirements for your student, you can check on-line or refer to the chart on the wall behind my desk. If you, as a parent, clearly understand the goals and requirements of the final test, you'll be better equipped to “train up your child in the way they should go” in preparation.

Keep moving, the goal is in sight!
