February 6th - February 10th

Dear Parents,

We have some exciting things going on this week.  We will be starting our Science Fair Project.  The students will be testing different batteries to see which ones last longer.  We will be testing them in flashlights and in battery operated toys. We will be testing them in class.  I will need to have you send in some batteries, but I am not sure of the sizes yet, so I will send an e-mail later on.  We will be learning how to do the scientific method as we go through this process, and they will be filling in information as they go along.  At the end of the project, they will be making a project board with all their information they learned and observed to share with you at the Science Fair, which will be March 15.

We also have our Crusaders Against Hunger on Friday. This is a special time for them as they prepare the meals, and understand they are helping to feed people that don't have as much.  You can still send in money this week for the meals.

Coming up in Religion, we will be discussing different aspects of Baptism.  We will be talking about and discussing the importance of Baptism and why it is important.  We will discuss the difference between ordinary water and baptismal water.  We will discuss birth and rebirth and how to share the baptism message.  Our verse to memorize for the week is Colossians 3:12.

In Reading, we will be focusing on the sequence in stories.  We will do some activites with sequencing.  We have been doing the parts of speech with the vocabulary words and discussing other parts of speech they could be.  We've been working on how to find information in stories.

In Grammar, we will be learning about singular and plural pronouns, and proper nouns.  They will be asked to recognize whether pronouns are singular and plural.  They will have to match them to the right category.  They will use them in their spelling homework.

In Spelling, we will be learning about compound words in their list.  They will name some other compound words.  We will do some activities with compound words.  They will have to make compound words from given words.

In Social Studies, we will be learning about how the government shares power.  We will talk about the 3 branches of government, and they will learn some examples of each branch.  They will learn the process a bill goes through before it becomes a law.  They will learn about local governments and the taxes that are paid.  They will learn how to read a latitude and longitude map.

In Math, we will learn how to decompose and transform polygons.  We are working hard on learning the different types of polygons and the number of sides and angles they have.  We are also learning the special qualifications some quadrilaterals have like parallel sides and right angles.  We have been working this week on how to compose polygons by practicing with the shapes.  They will learn about congruent and similar shapes.  They will learn how to draw lines of symmetry.

In Science, we will be doing something daily with the Science Fair Project, but also be learning about the planets and orbits in our solar system.  We will learn about asteroids that are out there as well.  We will discuss what it means to stargaze, the rings around Saturn, the rocket and its importance, and Sally Ride.  We will be doing some special activities to help us remember the planets, and how to recognize them.

For our Creative Writing, we will be coming up with a law they would like to see passed.  They will have to write the law, why they want it, and what it would accomplish.

Our tests for the week are:
Monday
Reading Test
Grammar Test
Spelling Test
Writing Test

Have a great weekend.  You will be receiving a note soon about the Science Fair Project with more details.  God bless you and your family.
