NOVEMBER

Religion 5th Grade:

"Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44). "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33). Some of Jesus' greatest teachings are included in Matthew, chapters 5-7, the focus of our study in the next unit of Voyages: Exploring God's Word. During this unit, "The Teachings of Jesus," I will encourage students to apply Jesus' words of instruction to the new life to which God's Spirit has called them through the Gospel. I encourage you to use these chapters for your family devotions at home during the next weeks; you can stress that the Holy Spirit works through God's Word, motivating, encouraging, and empowering all of us to honor God as salt and light with regard to our thoughts, words, and actions (Matthew 5:13-16). As together you study these chapters, the Holy Spirit will guide you as you teach about treating others respectfully and honestly (Matthew 5:21-30), praying faithfully (Matthew 7:7-11), and building faith on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer (Matthew 7:25). You will find many other opportunities for nurturing your student's faith in these chapters.

5th Grade Social Studies

We are working in chapter 4 this month. The early Spanish, French and English settlers had a great impact on the lives of the Native Americans and influenced what the United States would one day be. The settlements of Jamestown and Plymouth played an important role in the settling of what would one day be the United States. As we explore these ideas we will see what influences are evident today in our culture.

Each lesson we will do vocabulary and the Activity book pages that correspond. We will be taking notes on each lesson in the spiral notebooks. It will be important to know the concepts (questions and answers) as well as vocabulary. The test will be the week of the 10th of November. The specific day TBA.

6th Grade Geography:

Chapters 7 and 8 are about Mexico and Central America. We will be learning about the physical landscape, economy, government and culture of this region. Extra credit is available in the areas of math, science, and language arts. Students need to sign up with me for this extra credit. It will count the same as a quiz grade.

7th Grade Religion:

Confirmation is going well. We have begun our third packet on Prayer. Students have a prayer partner assigned by me for the duration of this packet. Once or twice a week students will meet with their prayer partner to share and pray a few minutes at the beginning of class. They will be recording their prayers and the answers to the prayers.

In addition they will be illustrating the armor of God found in Ephesians 6:14-17 with scriptures to go with each piece of the armor. You can see these soon in the stair well of the Middle school building.
